This video describes our recent study published in the Journal of Developmental & Behavioral Pediatrics titled “Subjective Well-Being and Self-Esteem in Preterm Born Adolescents: An Individual Participant Data Meta-Analysis”. The current study utilized data from four cohorts to investigate whether being born very preterm or moderate to late preterm is associated with lower well-being and self esteem in adolescence in comparison to full-term born adolescents. Media Use Among Kindergarteners From Low-Income Households During the COVID-19 Shutdown

We examined media use of children from low-income homes during COVID-19 school closings. Weekly average media use was 6.6 hours per day. Caregivers reported increased child media use for positive purposes, such as education and maintaining relationships with family and friends outside of the home, and potentially useful but less socially valued purposes, such as occupying the child’s time, whereas caregivers were completing other tasks. Having more children in the household was related to higher media use, and girls used media for maintaining remote relationships more than boys. Read the article. ​

Adolescent Sleep and Mental Health Across Race/Ethnicity
Does Parent-Child Connectedness Matter?

Sleep is essential for mental health, but the relationship has been understudied among racially and ethnically diverse youth. We analyzed a population-based sample of 8th, 9th, and 11th grade students to investigate the prevalence of, and relationships between, sleep duration, mental health conditions, and parent-child connectedness. We found that sleep duration and parent-child connectedness were associated with lower odds for depressive symptoms, suicide ideation, and suicide attempt; findings were similar within specific racial/ethnic groups. The sleep-mental health relationship became even stronger when youth had high parent connectedness, though this interactive benefit did not hold for all racial/ethnic groups. Read the article.​

Interactive Effects of Neighborhood Safety and Screen Time on Adolescent Internalizing Symptoms

This video describes the manuscript entitled “Interactive Effects of Neighborhood Safety and Screen Time on Adolescent Internalizing Symptoms”. In this cross-sectional study, we examined both the independent and interactive effects of perceptions of neighborhood safety and self-reported screen use on anxiety and depressive symptoms with late adolescents in the Southeastern US. Perceptions of neighborhood safety and screen use each uniquely predicted anxiety and depressive symptoms. The interaction between neighborhood safety and screen use was significant for anxiety, such that lower perceived neighborhood safety was associated with higher levels of anxiety only for adolescents with high levels screen use. Importance of Family Connection for Healthy Weight Behaviors Amid Adverse Family Experiences and Behavioral Difficulties

The current study utilized a moderated mediation model to investigate the role of family connection in the relationship between AFEs and HWBs for children with behavioral difficulties.
